Patrick Mahomes is a quarterback with an ego. He’s also the most exciting player in the NFL, and the Chiefs are his team now. This means that he is going to do what he wants, when he wants, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in an unfamiliar situation, at least for those who remember Andy Reid.

Of course, for fans who saw the club struggle under Herm Edwards and Todd Haley, an uneven offense and a leaky defense are an unpleasant and nostalgic sensation.

The Chiefs are on the verge of entering desperation mode with a 1-3 record and a last-place finish in the AFC West. Mahomes, the 2018 NFL MVP, doesn’t want anybody to worry just yet.

In their first five games, the 2021 Kansas City Chiefs averaged 30.8 points, which is encouraging. The two-time reigning AFC champs, on the other hand, have surrendered a league-high 32.6 points per game and have given up more than 430 yards of total offense four times this season.

Over the first five weeks of the season, teams outscored the Chiefs 163-154. In contrast, Mahomes and the Chiefs’ high-octane offense outscored opponents 149-110 in 2020.

According to ProFootballTalk, Mahomes recently rejected the notion that the Chiefs’ defense would be carried by the offense in the future. Through five weeks of action, the three-time Pro Bowl pick had an NFL-high 16 passing touchdowns.

“Every time we touch the football, we aim to score.” That’s how it’s been for the most of my time here, and that was the standard established before I ever arrived. It has nothing to do with what is going on on the other team’s side of the ball. It’s simply our offense’s role on this squad.”

Mahomes is attempting to approach the situation calmly and logically. You’ll have a hard time persuading Chiefs fans — or anybody brave enough to start Kansas City’s defense in fantasy football — to believe otherwise.

Fans of the Kansas City Chiefs should not be comforted by Mahomes’ statement.

In the NFL, even a poor or underperforming quarterback may be carried by a strong defense. Trent Dilfer of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens memorably accomplished it on route to the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory.

Carrying a poor or underperforming defense is much more difficult for a strong quarterback. Those are the teams who find themselves in 37-34 shootouts when it all comes down to one clutch throw and one botched read, regardless of the statistics. In a 12-0 or 15-10 victory, elite defenders like Ray Lewis and the Ravens of 2000 could get away with showing their muscles on defense.

For those who have Mahomes in their fantasy football lineups or have taken the over, his desire to score “every single time” he touches the ball is comforting. It won’t stop opposition quarterbacks from averaging 296 yards per game against the Chiefs.

If the Texas Tech Product was attempting to instill confidence in his supporters, he failed miserably. The reality is that, with a difficult schedule ahead of him, he’ll have to attempt to carry the Chiefs’ defense forward.

The Chiefs aren’t helped by Mahomes’ recent string of turnovers.

Mahomes must do everything in his power to keep the Chiefs in games if he wants to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time as an NFL starter. In previous years, it would have been as reliable as seeing Cris Collinsworth enter the NBC broadcast booth.

Collinsworth is gliding blissfully, while Mahomes seems to be human. Through the first five weeks of the season, he’s already equaled last season’s interception total with six. For the first time since his debut season as a starter, he’s thrown interceptions in four consecutive games.

The Chiefs begin a crucial three-game stretch against the Washington Football Team, Tennessee Titans, and New York Giants, all of whom had a combined 6-9 record before Week 6. Mahomes hasn’t played Washington or the Giants yet, but in a 35-32 defeat to the Titans on Nov. 10, 2019, he went 36-of-50 for 446 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.

When the two met again in the AFC Championship Game that year, Mahomes tossed three more touchdowns and ran for another. Kansas City triumphed 35-24 and went on to beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54 two weeks later.

Before they can even consider a third consecutive Super Bowl trip, Mahomes and the Chiefs must achieve a lot. We can return to picturing the great quarterback hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in February if he can minimize his interceptions and win all three games of a Week 9 showdown with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
