William Saliba was overjoyed with his individual performance as Marseille held ten-man Paris Saint-Germain to a goalless draw in Ligue 1, calling it his greatest effort to date.
Saliba joined Arsenal for £27 million from Saint-Etienne in 2019, but the 20-year-old has yet to make his first-team debut for the Gunners, and he joined Marseille on a season-long loan in the summer.
Mikel Arteta has reminded Saliba of his talent this season, and the young centre-back has done exactly that, receiving wonderful praise for his solid performances at the heart of Marseille’s defense.
On Sunday evening, the Frenchman faced possibly his hardest test yet, as PSG, the league leaders, traveled to Marseille with a superstar front-three of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, and Lionel Messi.
However, just before the hour mark, PSG’s Achraf Hakimi received a straight red card, and the visitors left the Orange Velodrome dissatisfied, with Saliba performing a last-ditch charge on Mbappe in the 83rd minute to maintain the result goalless.
‘When I saw he make the call, I said, “Take the red or I’ll take the ball.” Soon after the final whistle, Saliba told reporters, “I tackled the ball properly, so there you go.”
‘Playing a Classico at the Velodrome in these environment is the finest game of my career.’
‘Today we drew, which isn’t too awful. We lacked a little efficiency, but we’ll attempt to get all three points starting on Wednesday.’
After PSG was reduced to 10 men halfway through the second half, Saliba claimed there was a sense of’regret’ in the Marseille dressing room.
‘It was a fantastic game; they scored the first offside goal, we equalized, but it was also offside,’ he said.
‘It was a fantastic game, with opportunities for both teams.’ We intended to reclaim the three points after the red card, but well, we drew. We must not be discouraged and must go on.
‘There is some sorrow since we would have wanted to grab three points with the red card, but we drew and it’s not that horrible.’

Marseille moved up to fourth place in the French top division as a consequence of the win, and Saliba was happy with the team’s determination to hold PSG at bay.
‘With 35 minutes remaining, they got the guy sent off.’ We had possession at first, but even with 10 men, they were able to generate some momentum,’ he said.
‘They have some of the finest players in the world up top, so we had to keep focused.’ They were able to hold the ball and attack despite being down a man.
Football (and other sports)
‘What matters most is that we did not surrender a goal.’ We had a terrific game overall.
‘We showed amazing character, we fought until the finish, and that’s what we want here,’ said the captain.
