Silversea Christens New Silver Moon In Athens, Greece

Silversea Cruises has christened its new Silver Moon, the first ship in its fleet to be named after the moon. The vessel is designed with a contemporary twist on traditional cruise lines and features an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere.

The is there a moon tonight is a question that has been asked for decades. The answer to the question, is yes. There is a new silver moon in Athens, Greece.

The Silver Moon, a 596-guest ultra-luxury ship from Silversea Cruises, was christened at an evening ceremony in Piraeus, Greece, near Athens.

Gaia Gaja, of the famous Italian Gaja Winery, is the ship’s godmother, and her wines were served at the gala banquet that followed.

Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Silversea Cruises, was among those present at the event.

“This is the first fresh name of a ship since, in our instance, the epidemic began,” Fain informed the audience. “However, it not only honors the details of this ship, but it also acts as a powerful symbol of the return of cruising to the general public.

Fain added, “The custom of naming a new vessel dates back thousands of years and represents something extremely powerful.” “However, it now has a special meaning since it represents not only the birth of a new vessel, but also the revival of cruising as a tourist destination. For many of us, the last 17 months have been difficult and unpleasant in many ways, but now we can see that the globe is opening up and cruising is leading the way, and cruising from Greece is a fantastic location to start.”

Roberto Martinoli, president and CEO of Silversea Cruises; Jason Liberty, executive vice president and CFO of Royal Caribbean Group; Captain Chavdar Georgiev; Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of Fincantieri’s merchant ships division; and Harry Theoharis, Greece’s tourism minister, were among those who attended the christening ceremony.

The Silver Moon was delivered on October 30 in Italy and began service from Athens on June 18 with a series of 10-day cruises through the Greek Islands.

“This is a watershed moment in our cruise line’s history,” Martinoli added. “Today, we christened Silver Moon as the ninth ship in our fleet, signaling a shift in luxury travel in the twenty-first century. Silver Moon leads the way in the comeback of ultra-luxury sailing as the first ultra-luxury cruise ship to set sail this year. She exemplifies the resiliency and power of our industry. Our visitors will re-discover the globe in unmatched comfort and hushed luxury aboard the newest addition to our fleet. I’d like to thank the Royal Caribbean Group, Fincantieri, Captain Georgiev and the ship’s crew, as well as our onshore staff, for making this historic event possible.”

Silver Moon is a sister ship of Silver Muse, which was built at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The ship has redesigned public areas, butler service in all suite levels, and a crew-to-guest ratio of almost 1:1.

Silver Moon is also the first ship to use Silversea’s innovative culinary program, Sea and Land Taste, or S.A.L.T. Three new aboard locations serve as a gastronomic hotspot for passengers. Guests are encouraged to dive deeper into each region’s food and culture with locally inspired meals, beverages, and demonstrations in S.A.L.T. Kitchen, S.A.L.T. Lab, and S.A.L.T. Bar. S.A.L.T. shore excursions allow visitors to get a personal look at each destination’s cuisine and drink culture.

Silver Moon is the first of two ships in Silversea’s fleet to return to operation, and she is joined by the new 100-passenger ship Silver Origin, which is currently running new Galapagos Islands itineraries.

On July 29, the Silver Muse will set sail from Seattle for Alaska. Silver Shadow will begin doing Iceland circumnavigations from Reykjavik on July 30.

Additional Silversea ships are planned to sail in the near future, with the Silver Dawn, the company’s third new ship since 2020, due to sail on her maiden trip in November 2021.

Silver Moon is one of six Silversea ships to get Certification in Infection Prevention for the Maritime Industry (CIP-M) from the classification organization DNV. The others are Silver Muse, Silver Origin, Silver Shadow, Silver Whisper, and Silver Explorer. As part of the company’s healthy return to service, these certifications demonstrate Silversea’s dedication to protecting the health and well-being of passengers, crew, and the communities it serves.
